The implementation of the EU Pay Transparency Directive marks a significant milestone in the evolution of compensation policies.
Contrary to some headlines, the new legislation does not grant employees a general right to access their colleagues’ individual salaries. Instead, employees will be entitled to request only aggregated and anonymized information on pay levels, in full compliance with data protection laws.
The Directive pursues a different objective: increasing transparency in pay systems to identify and prevent unjustified pay disparities, with a particular focus on the gender pay gap. The new rules also affect recruitment practices by requiring employers to disclose the salary or salary range in job advertisements and prohibiting them from asking candidates about their previous compensation.
The underlying principle is straightforward: the economic value of a position should be determined by the role itself and the skills and qualifications it requires—not by a candidate’s salary history. For employers, this means reviewing the structure of their compensation policies and ensuring consistency in job classification and evaluation systems.
The key question remains: are organizations truly prepared for this transformation—one that is cultural before it is operational?
